Dr Walter Snelling

In 1910 LPG (Propane & Butane) were first discovered in Pittsburgh USA by Dr Walter Snelling. Working at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a complaint was filed by a motor car owner that discovered that   the gasoline he purchased was evaporating at a rapid and expensive rate. As Dr Snelling began to investigate, he found that the evaporating vapours were propane, butane and other hydrocarbons. Dr Snelling then built a still to separate gasoline into its liquid and vapour components. In 1913 Dr Snelling sold his propane patent for $50 000.00 to Frank Phillips , the founder of Phillip’s Petroleum Company. The Franklin Institute awarded Dr Snelling the Edward Longstreth Medal in 1962 for his work.
